Involving Bub's Dad

The Pelvic Toner

Your partner can be an important source of support during pregnancy. It's good to make him feel he's part of what's happening and to involve him as much as possible.

Men can be a great help while you're pregnant by keeping stress to a minimum, being patient and supportive, communicating with you about everything that's happening, encouraging good nutrition and exercise and learning about the birth process to name a few.

You can help your partner feel involved by having him attend prenatal checkups whenever possible and including him in all the plans for the baby's arrival.

Because she is carrying the baby, the woman is directly involved in the pregnancy whereas her partner is less involved and so not every expectant father is as excited about the impending birth as the mum-to-be. If this is your situation you may need to encourage your partner to become more involved by discussing his feelings about the pregnancy.  Discussion will be helpful for you both if you are open and direct about your feelings, fears and uncertainties.

Fathers often do not grasp the feeling of fatherhood until  they actually hold the new bub in their arms.  As your pregnancy develops, encourage your partner to feel the baby's movements and share the experience.  Involve him with decisions about furnishings for the nursery and the planned routine when baby arrives.

You both may be under more stress then usual so its important to be understanding and thoughtful of one another and a good idea to set aside quality time to spend together.

Not all men feel the same fears and emotions during pregnancy but some common questions that might be going through his mind are:

Will he be a good father
Can he support the family financially
Will he do a good job at the birth
Will you love the baby more than you love him
