Try not to overdo things and get as much rest as possible as breathlessness may be more of a problem now.  Slow down any exercise regime to one that’s comfortable for you.  If your breasts feel uncomfortable when you go to bed, wear a maternity or specially designed sleep bra at night.

Mum

You are probably starting to slow down again after feeling fairly energetic during your second trimester.  Exercise is still important but gets harder as you grow heavier and larger.  You should have gained between 9.5 and 12.5kg (21 and 28 pounds) by now.

You may be feeling increased excitement and anxiousness about the impending birth.

Squeezing your nipple gently will produce a small amount of yellow liquid (colostrum). This will be your baby’s first nourishment containing excellent nutrients and antibodies if you have decided to breastfeed and gives bub a great start in life.

You have probably started your antenatal classes and should be prepared and well informed regarding pain relief options and issues about labour and delivery.

Bub

Baby’s eyes are now completely opened and responding to light and darkness as his irises are dilating and contracting as needed.  Also a loud noise near you may cause him to jump.

His lungs and digestive tract are close to being fully mature.  He will more than double his weight again between now and birth.  Almost all major organs are functioning. His lungs are still maturing and he will be able to breathe unassisted when born.

His total length is now 42cm (16.5 inches) and he weighs around 1.6kg (3.5 pounds). He is likely to turn into the anterior position now with his with head down and spine facing outwards in the direction of your navel.

Baby may move to the rhythm of music and he may also prefer some types of music to others at this stage.

Tips

  • Pay attention to your body’s signals and rest when you need to.
  • Swimming, stretching and walking are excellent exercise options for pregnant women.
