Skin, Hair and Nail Changes in Pregnancy

Share

Women may expect different changes in their bodies during pregnancy such as skin, hair and nail changes. At the onset of pregnancy, hormonal changes occur and as the body of women adjusts to its new conditions, prominent changes are observed not only on the size and the weight of their abdomen.

There are some women who start to have acnes on the first weeks of pregnancy. This may be attributed to the hormonal activities that are taking place within the body but once their body is able to regulate their hormones, they may have better and glowing skin condition. However, they are advised to keep their skin clean at all times.
Some women may also have skin tags during pregnancy especially in their arm pits and also on their eyelids. They may just leave these skin tags as they are not harmful though they can also be removed by a doctor. Changes in skin color particularly on the breasts, the nipples, and the genital skin as well as on the inner thighs are common among pregnant women. This happens because of the overproduction of melanin. This skin condition however, may disappear later after the pregnancy.

Women may also notice that their hair may be thicker and may grow faster during pregnancy. It may not really be a problem if they are thinking of their hair on their head but they may be concerned with the fast hair growth in the other parts of their body. Hair may also grow in areas that they do not expect it to be there like on their chin, neck and even around their nipple area.

Some pregnant women though may experience excessive hair fall when they get pregnant. The hair on the scalp is on the resting stage at this time and some women may also experience hair loss or thinning of hair after their pregnancy. This condition though is not permanent and women may just learn how to live with it as there is no available medical treatment for such condition.

Women may also observe changes on the structure of their fingernails as well as on their toenails. They tend to grow a little thicker and stronger too. Pregnant women who do not experience this during pregnancy should tell their health care providers about it. They may lack protein intake in such case.

These physical changes may be expected by women when they are pregnant. Though most of the changes are a natural part of being pregnant, they may consult with their doctors about their concerns and fears about it. After their pregnancy, they may expect their body systems to return to its normal functions and for these body changes to disappear.
