Vaccines are generally given to people in order to strengthen their immune system. These are necessary to protect them from deadly and infectious diseases. This in turn helps to keep people in the community and in the entire society from being infected by communicable diseases. Vaccines for pregnant women are also necessary in order to protect not only the mothers but also their unborn babies. However, pregnant women have to consult with their medical care experts as to the vaccines that are supposed to be given to them.

Pregnant women have to be aware that not all vaccines are safe for them. Live virus vaccines are not given to them because it might be harmful to the babies inside their wombs. There are certain vaccines that are given during their 2nd or 3rd trimester and some before the baby is born or right after delivery. Some of the vaccines that pregnant women need include Hepatitis B, Influenza and Tetanus/Diphtheria. However vaccines such as dTap, Hepatitis, MMR, Varicella, Pneumococcal, OPV and IPV should be avoided. These vaccines for pregnant women may cause miscarriage, birth defects or premature births as well. Although these ideas may still be theoretical in nature, it is advisable for pregnant women to talk about it with their medical experts.

Pregnant who may experience some side effects from any type of vaccination given to them should immediately consult with their doctors. There is a need to assess the potential risks against the benefits that will be derived by the mother and the unborn child. There have also been studies that were conducted and today pregnant women are also advised to take a flu shot for their own and their babies’ protection from influenza including its complications. Some studies also indicate that flu shots do not cause miscarriage among pregnant women.

Although vaccines for pregnant women may be a decision that females have to make later on, they can do a little more reading about it. There are numerous researches that are being conducted in order to back the theory that vaccines will not harm the mother as well as the unborn child. They may be assured by the advice and the recommendation of their doctors who can answer their questions regarding immunizations during pregnancy. However, mothers to be have to see to it that they also get proper rest and sleep as well as proper nutrition in order for them to help their immune system to become stronger aside from the vaccines for pregnant women.
