Anxiety and Depression among Pregnant Women

Changes in body hormones may trigger anxiety and depression among pregnant women. These may have negative effects on both mothers and babies. Though most studies have focused on postpartum blues as it is almost always expected to happen, there are new interests now on finding out more about antenatal anxiety and depression among pregnant women. Some studies indicate that more pregnant women feel anxious more than they are depressed during the pregnancy stage. However, there are still no clear explanations for the causes of anxiety and depression among pregnant women aside from the changes in the levels of their hormones.

Anxiety and depression among pregnant women may occur because of the combination of certain factors. There may be some women who are more prone to this type of mood disorders such as having previous problems related to anxiety and depression or having a family member with the some mental problems. Other factors that may contribute to this condition include unwanted pregnancy, stress and distress from relationship with spouse, single motherhood, or low self-esteem. There are still numerous reasons for this behaviour to be manifested such as traumatic experiences such as sexual abuse, financial problems and lack of support groups.

Anxiety and depression among pregnant women may be treated but most of them would not want any medications because the more that the health of their babies will be affected. Experts suggest that they undergo psychotherapy. These types of treatments have been found to be effective especially in treating those who are undergoing postpartum depression so it is more likely to be effective as well when used for women who are anxious and depressed while they are in the antenatal stage.

Though medications may not be the best choice to treat anxiety and depression among pregnant women, there are instances when it is the only recourse. Some women tend to have serious mood disorders that lend them to become suicidal. However, guidance and close monitoring from their attending physicians are necessary in order to ensure the health of the mothers and their babies. Psychotherapy may also be used together with the medications as determined by their doctors to be appropriate.

Anxiety and depression among pregnant women may be lessened if they have the support of their partners as well as their families and friends. Good social relations with others will help them get through their pregnancy with lesser problems. Significant people especially the partners should provide the love, the care and the support needed to avoid severe bouts with anxiety and depression among pregnant women.
