Multiple Pregnancy Problems

Women who are carrying more than one fetus in their wombs may experience multiple pregnancy problems. The weight of two babies inside may bring more discomfort and so with three or four or even more. Pregnant women with multiple babies are increasing their risks of having complications with every additional fetus that they have to carry.

Some of the multiple pregnancy problems that may be expected may include preterm delivery, intra uterine growth restriction and low birth weight. Pregnant women with multiple babies are also prone to pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes. They may also have other problems such as placental abruption and fetal loss as well as Cesarean delivery.

Premature babies are one of the multiple pregnancy problems that may bring more complications for the infants. Aside from having low birth weight, they may likely have more health problems because they have not yet developed their body systems that are necessary for their survival once they are out of the womb. They also have low immune systems so they may get infections easily.

There are various factors that can contribute to women having multiple babies which may in turn bring about multiple pregnancy problems. Heredity is one of the possible causes of multiple babies at one time pregnancy because it may run in the family.  Women who also decide to have babies later when they are over 30 may have greater chances of having twins. Those who have had previous multiple pregnancies may also expect to have the same in their succeeding pregnancies. There are also certain races of people who are more likely to have twins or multiple pregnancies.

Multiple pregnancy problems brought about by two or more babies may also be expected because of some ovulation stimulating medicines that are taken where several egg cells may be fertilized at one time. Some women may also choose to have multiple babies through the aid of technology like in vitro fertilization procedure.

Pregnant women may observe some signs that they have multiple pregnancies such as bigger uterus than expected. They also feel more of the morning sickness as well as a high increase from their normal appetite. Pregnant women may also feel that there are movements inside their womb which are coming from different parts at the same instance.

Multiple pregnancy problems may be lessened through multi-fetal pregnancy reduction. This is a process where the number of fetuses inside the womb is decreased through the use of lethal medication. This may be done to increase the chances of the other fetuses for survival and for better health. However, pregnant women may need to learn and know more about it before they think of it as a solution to their problem as this could also be a moral and an ethical dilemma as well.
